Virginia Creeper Trail Updates
The Virginia Creeper Trail is NOW OPEN from Abingdon to Damascus—17 miles from the Start to the Heart. Ready for a change? Let’s reverse the ride! Shuttle services are available from local bike outfitters for the Abingdon-to-Damascus section, as the upper trail undergoes assessment and restoration.
For over 100 years, the Virginia Creeper Trail has been a vital connection between our communities. We’re open for business, and our trail towns need your continued support. Be sure to explore lodging, restaurants, and shopping in both Abingdon and Damascus.

Trail Closure: Whitetop Station to Damascus
For public safety, the upper half of the Virginia Creeper Trail within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area remains CLOSED by Forest Order. There is currently no access beyond Damascus.
The US Forest Service has completed its initial assessment of the upper trail, identifying:
- 18 destroyed trestles
- 13 standing/damaged trestles
- Large sections of missing treadway

Recovery Efforts Underway
A multi-agency Virginia Creeper Trail Recovery Team has formed and is meeting regularly to coordinate restoration efforts. More trail-related updates will be shared as they become available.
